In Brief with Toaki Okano

Toaki Okano is an Auckland-based photographer known for his minimalist style and design sensibility, which is influenced by his Japanese heritage. Recently recognised by Lürzer's Archive as one of the top 200 photographers of 2024, Toaki’s work stands out for its precision and impeccable lighting technique.

Toaki has photographed Simon James furniture for many years, bringing his keen eye for detail and a considered aesthetic to every image. We are pleased to share Toaki's In Brief, where he discusses his five favourite things.

"The OTO bench fits into small spaces whilst making a strong statement as a beautiful object. The character of the wood work, twisted with forced energy, complements the design."

"I am always attracted to beautifully crafted wooden chairs, especially those made of oak with well-executed joinery. When combined with hide leather, I can imagine it will age gracefully."

"There are many floor lamps available, but this one truly stands out to me. Its elegant shape is very appealing."

"I appreciate the balance between functionality and beauty in an object. Its weight adds even more to its statement, this one will be on my book shelves."

"I have been looking for a 'nice' cutlery set for a while, but I've realised how hard these are to find. When I saw this one by John Pawson for When Objects Work, I knew it would be a top pick."
