Simon James is a design house inspired by the substance of daily life. Through honest materials, a desire for simplicity and lasting craftsmanship, Simon James celebrates the spaces we spend time in. We aim to have thoughtful influence within these spaces, which extends to the many avenues we currently employ to reduce our footprint and all the ways we still have to go.

Local Manufacturing

All Simon James products are locally manufactured and support a wide array of companies and New Zealanders. With our partner brands outside of New Zealand, we support their sustainability endeavours and work with market leaders in innovative manufacturing and approaches to design.

Made to Order

We make the majority of our furniture items to order, or in small runs, allowing us to reduce our waste and only produce what is truly needed.

Life Extension

We believe that investing in well considered furniture allows you to live better, with less, that lasts longer and Simon James products are designed with this in mind. To extend the life of these pieces, we offer reupholstery and refurbishing services that allow you to enjoy your Simon James products for many years to come.

Product Stewardship

If you have no further use for your Simon James products, we offer a product stewardship programme. If suitable the products are refurbished and rehomed with community driven organisations and when not suitable for donation they are recycled where possible.

Materials & Manufacturing

We work with natural timbers and other materials that are considered for their long use of life and ability to be recycled to further extend their lifecycle and reduce their overall carbon footprint. We consider all aspects of the materials and manufacturing process, from their energy consumption and waste during manufacture and are working on improvements where possible.

This includes the use of water-based lacquers on timber products, timbers sourced through American Hardwood Export Council and powdercoating that releases no VOCs during manufacture.

We are currently undertaking testing and investigations into foam and feather replacements for our upholstery items and hope to have alternative solutions soon. Currently the feathers used are a by-product of the meat industry and foams are of the highest commercial grade to ensure lifespan of the product, backed by a 10 year guarantee.

Packaging

We utilise reusable and recyclable packaging and are always reviewing options to reduce packaging to the minimum requirements. We offer packaging removal to ensure our packaging is reused or recycled whenever possible. We are constantly investigating low-carbon options for packaging materials that are not readily recyclable.

Our Locations

Our stores and offices all undertake local recycling and composting practices, along with a shift to paperless processes, in an effort to reduce our overall waste.
