The Cross Extending Table by Matthew Hilton is a fine example of advanced wood manufacturing techniques. Made from a solid wood base, with a veneered top, it has two extendable leaves that are stored in the frame when the table is in a closed position. The table is large, yet retains a visual balance due to its unusually thick top. The design of the base allows for 6 to 8 chairs, or 12 to 14 when extended. This table is a particularly functional design: sturdy, handsome and built for multiple uses. Some assembly is required.
Matthew hilton
From an early age, Hilton was interested in painting, sculpture and architecture, and yet, the notion of being a "designer" didn't occur to him until it was suggested by a tutor at Portsmouth College of Art. The idea suited Hilton, who enrolled in the renowned Furniture and Design course at England's Kingston Polytechnic. After graduation he worked as an industrial designer and model maker until 1984 when he set up his own design studio/workshop. Two years later he launched a series of shelves at the Milan Furniture Fair, and in 1991 he designed the Balzac Armchair, which was first received with circumspect curiosity but then quickly embraced as a modern classic.
Since the Balzac, however, Hilton's work has taken on a less stylistic, more functional approach. He believes in creating furniture that people live with, and his inspiration often comes from long-established furniture forms. He now works to update and reinvent these forms, while keeping an eye on the future. In 2006, Hilton's Cross Extension Table won the annual Elle Decoration Design Award for Best in Furniture. The table showcases Hilton's advanced wood manufacturing techniques, as well as his sense of proportion, scale and functionality.
Matthew Hilton has learned from every piece he's designed, whether it was because it allowed him to work in a new material, with a new manufacturer or for stylistic reasons. "All of my pieces are loaded with meaning and memory and are very personal to me," says the British designer. Hilton, however, is quick to add that he doesn't believe in design movements, and instead prefers to think of the design process as part of the evolution of any object through history.
Furniture Order Process
Furniture and Lighting items are available to purchase online or with our dedicated consultants at our Auckland showroom.
Our range consists of:
Stocked Items
We hold a range of items in stock from all the brands we work with, these focus on products such as dining chairs, coffee tables, side tables, dining tables, lighting, outdoor furniture, beds, barstools and a small amount of upholstered items. These can normally be ready for dispatch within 3 - 4 days of receiving an order.
Made to Order Locally
Many of our products and particularly upholstered items are made to order, this way we can produce a product that is unique to your requirements. In terms of fabrics there are many possibilities outside of what you see on this site and we are happy to discuss what will work best for you and your environment. Lead times noted online are an estimation and can vary depending on the time of the year, fabric and material availability or manufacturing workloads. For example a chosen fabric may be out of stock, or our manufacturers have pre-christmas cutoffs from late September.
Imported Product
We strive to keep a selection of our best sellers from the import brands we work with in stock, but to keep this range diverse we aren’t able to hold all items in stock, so a number of our imported items will have lead times from worldwide locations. Lead times noted online are an estimation and can vary depending on the time of the year or with freight disruptions.
Ordering products with lead times:
When an order is placed for a product with a lead time, please make sure all details are correct as made to order or imported items are unable to be returned. If you need to make a change to your order, please contact us within one business day, as we may not be able to accommodate changes after this time or a fee may be incurred.
When your order is placed, we will review and be in touch if there are any changes to the noted lead time, such as fabric availability or orders placed after Christmas manufacturing deadlines. Otherwise you will receive a confirmation of your order and we will touch base closer to completion to arrange collection or delivery.
If you have any questions about ordering Furniture & Lighting online, or if you would prefer to place orders over the phone or at our Auckland showroom, please contact us on 09 3777 5556 or info@simonjames.co.nz or view our FAQs.
