Lap Shelving - Double Bay Frame
Case
The Lap Shelving by award-winning designer Marina Bautier is a modular storage solution designed with simplicity in mind. Whether you need a single 1m shelving unit for an alcove or an entire wall of shelving in an office, the lap shelving is adaptable to work in different environments. Starting with a single unit, you can add extensions to provide you with enough storage. Choose from a frame filled entirely with sturdy steel shelving to house your collection of tomes, or a mixture of trays, deep and shallow boxes with shelves to store a variety of paperbacks and objects.
Marina designed the shelving system with this modularity and adaptability from realising the strange way people store objects in a box or on a tray that is then placed on a shelf. The name 'Lap' refers to how the metal overlaps the wood structure. How you arrange the components is up to you, and they can be rearranged at any time.
Double bay frame options are available in three sizes. Low: requires 6 tiers, medium: requires 10 tiers and tall: requires 12 tiers - for deep and shallow boxes, these pair with a short flat or tray shelf to fill one shelving tier.
To build your own custom set up, select your frame then choose the accessory components here.
Pictured first: Medium black Oak frame with black long tray shelf, bookshelf, short tray shelf, shallow box, three deep boxes and long tray shelf in first bay. Five bookshelves in second bay. Accessories sold separately.
Marina bautier
Graduating from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, the Belgian designer Marina Bautier set up her design practice in 2002. She has gone on to refine her own deft design language to produce work for manufacturers such as Idée, Ligne Roset and Case, and also takes on interior and private client work.
Marina Bautier cultivates a design approach based on use. Away from any pretence, she creates furniture and objects which render many services without ever encumbering.
While she gives priority to simple structures and materials easily manufactured, she also carefully considers appearance and implementation qualities.
Away from technological rhetoric, Marina Bautier emphasizes the beauty and the modernity of familiar materials, and especially of wood. Spotted as ‘the names we’re watching’ by Elle Decoration UK in 2007, she has recently been awarded ‘Best use of Material: wood’ by Wallpaper Magazine.

Furniture Order Process
Furniture and Lighting items are available to purchase online or with our dedicated consultants at our Auckland showroom.
Our range consists of:
Stocked Items
We hold a range of items in stock from all the brands we work with, these focus on products such as dining chairs, coffee tables, side tables, dining tables, lighting, outdoor furniture, beds, barstools and a small amount of upholstered items. These can normally be ready for dispatch within 3 - 4 days of receiving an order.
Made to Order Locally
Many of our products and particularly upholstered items are made to order, this way we can produce a product that is unique to your requirements. In terms of fabrics there are many possibilities outside of what you see on this site and we are happy to discuss what will work best for you and your environment. Lead times noted online are an estimation and can vary depending on the time of the year, fabric and material availability or manufacturing workloads. For example a chosen fabric may be out of stock, or our manufacturers have pre-christmas cutoffs from late September.
Imported Product
We strive to keep a selection of our best sellers from the import brands we work with in stock, but to keep this range diverse we aren’t able to hold all items in stock, so a number of our imported items will have lead times from worldwide locations. Lead times noted online are an estimation and can vary depending on the time of the year or with freight disruptions.
Ordering products with lead times:
When an order is placed for a product with a lead time, please make sure all details are correct as made to order or imported items are unable to be returned.
If you need to make a change to your order, please contact us within one business day, as we may not be able to accommodate changes after this time or a fee may be incurred.
When your order is placed, we will review and be in touch if there are any changes to the noted lead time, such as fabric availability or orders placed after Christmas manufacturing deadlines.
Otherwise you will receive a confirmation of your order and we will touch base closer to completion to arrange collection or delivery.
If you have any questions about ordering Furniture & Lighting online, or if you would prefer to place orders over the phone or at our Auckland showroom, please contact us on 09 3777 5556 or info@simonjames.co.nz or view our FAQs.
Shipping & Returns
We ship furniture and lighting orders nationwide within New Zealand. These are either shipped with a selected courier or fragile freight carrier, with the pricing dependent on the location, size and weight of the item/s. The total freight will be calculated at checkout for your order. We reserve the right to apply additional charges for rural or difficult access.
We offer free collection from our Auckland Warehouse in Eden Terrace on Monday-Friday. Saturday collection of smaller items can be pre-arranged before end of day Thursday via our Furniture & Lighting Showroom.
RETURNS
Made to order or imported products are made to your unique requirements and cannot be cancelled after one business day from placing the order.
In stock product can be returned within 14 days, for a credit or exchange. Please choose carefully as we do not refund for change of mind. Products must be returned unused, with all original packaging and we
reserve the right to refuse a return if the product does not meet our requirements. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the purchaser, unless the products received were damaged/faulty.
