With the Tronco range, Mattiazzi is interested in the frisson between solid panel construction and the truly skilled craft of its making. It is unlike previous designs for Mattiazzi that have a sculptural softness; Tronco’s character is formed from solid strips of wood in what appears as very elementary construction, yet its simplicity is the result of iterative experimentation and a high regard for material honesty. Tronco is made with the same extraordinary level of attention to detail that Mattiazzi is now known for. The Tronco chair features a new level of function for a solid wood chair: stacking 10-high and connecting in long rows. Tronco has surprisingly natural comfort and works well in multiples, not just alone. Its form is modest enough so that it takes on the appearance of ‘texture’ when shown in numbers. It lifts the atmosphere of interior spaces that require many chairs, whether it is a dining hall or a chapel. Tronco, in effect, creates a terrain of its own in any architecture. A range of coloured stains help to bring out the ash grain and add further dimension. Like the Tronco chair, the table is similarly made and chamfered at the edges so that it can join easily with others.
We hold a range of items in stock from all the brands we work with, these focus on product such as dining chairs, coffee tables, side tables, dining tables, lighting, outdoor furniture, beds barstools and a small amount of upholstered items. These can normally be ready for dispatch with in 3 - 4 days as receiving an order.
Made to Order
We work slightly differently to some other retailers where most of our upholstered items are made to order, this way we can produce a product that is unique to you. This process starts with understanding your requirements and our consultants offering furniture solutions that are best suited to you. In terms of fabric there are many possibilities outside of what you just see on this site and we are happy to discuss what will work best for you and your environment.
We strive to keep a selection of our best sellers from the import brands we work with in stock, but to keep this range diverse we aren’t able to hold all items in stock, so a number of our imported items will have lead time out of Europe. We can provide further lead time information during the time of enquiring as this can vary depending on the time of the year.
Sam Hecht was born in London in 1969. His training began at the Central Saint Martins School of Art. His interest in industrial design and architecture led him to apprenticeships including David Chipperfield. Hecht thus began to define the style that characterises his personality as a designer. A profound search for the essential, acute observation of the world we live in and a belief that simplicity can be inspirational. In 1993 he completed his Masters at the Royal College of Art, followed by 3 years in California with IDEO, and 3 years in Tokyo. This period involved the collaborations with Naoto Fukasawa, producing some startling product typologies over the course of 6 years. In 2002, he co-founded Industrial Facility with his partner Kim Colin. In 2010 he was awarded the ‘Designs of the Year’ for the Branca Chair. In 2008, he was elected as a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI), the highest accolade a designer can receive in the UK, and was also nominated for the Prince Philip Design Prize.
