Tio Coffee Table
Tio was the first collection to be launched by Massproductions, in 2009. The collection was an immediate success, with both the Tio Chair and Tio Table going into the permanent collection of Sweden’s National Museum in their first year of production.
The Tio Collection consists of chairs, stools and tables in steel wire to be used both indoors and outdoors. The Tio Chair, Tio Easy Chair and Tio Barstool are stackable up to twelve pieces. Tio Tables come in four heights and offer a large selection of table tops, colours, materials and sizes.
“The design for “Tio” was the end result of a few months of thinking, sketching and sculpting. My point of departure was to arrange a fan of wires into a comfortable seat and then connect them in a straightforward and logical frame, which minimised the amount of steel used. So really the appeal comes from pragmatic thinking, executed within the restraints of the materials characteristics and according to an industrial productions process. Sounds clinical, but the result is something I find very pleasing. For those who find steel wires too hard, we have developed a seat pad to give extra comfort during long dining sessions” – says designer Chris Martin.
After working as an assistant in Jasper Morrison’s studio in London, British designer Chris Martin left the UK and moved to Stockholm, where he worked as a freelance designer for IKEA and met Swedish designer Magnus Elebäck. In 2009, the pair joined forces to establish Massproductions – a furniture company that prides itself on producing “high quality, tactile furniture in a modernist spirit”. In their new role as directors of Massproductions, Martin and Elebäck are using their knowledge and experience of working with industrial production to create their own collection of elegant and functional furniture pieces with a distinctive Scandinavian aesthetic.
